Now, to preface this blog, I would just like to just provide you with some context. Previously, we had been staying in a room with our grandparents but because of some unexpected circumstances we had to leave suddenly… very suddenly – like one moment we had a place to stay and the next we didn’t kind of suddenly. So we found ourselves – two grown adults – without a home. Thankfully one of our friends was gracious enough to help us with some accommodation which led us to the surf lodge and the inception of this blog post. Crazy stuff! It was a beautiful and poetic situation where a really terrible predicament birthed an amazing one-week adventure. Okay, end of preface. Time to talk about our stay.
Just where is this place?
Okay, first off, let’s talk about the location. We found ourselves living in a paradise. The surf lodge is aptly located in the little suburb of Paradise Beach, Jeffrey’s Bay and we were blessed enough to stay there for an entire week! How cool is that?!
Paradise Beach is about a 10-minute drive from the main town of Jeffrey’s Bay, the world-renowned surfing spot so it is a perfect place to slow down and enjoy some tranquil moments but also has something for those looking for some adventure. It is also very safe and private so if you enjoy a bike ride or walking around the neighborhood, you’ll love it. Don’t expect to wander too long though. Paradise Beach covers an area of about 4.06 square kilometers (1.57 sq mi) buuut it’s still a pretty walk.
Now because Paradise Beach is outside of the main town, you will need to drive into town if you would like to do some shopping. This is not a massive inconvenience – as I said, it’s only 10 minutes away – but it’s still something to keep in mind.
The lodge itself was built on top of a hill overlooking the ocean providing you with a stunning view and after a seriously short walk – not even joking, it takes less than a minute – along the boardwalk you’ll find yourself walking along the beautiful coastline of Paradise Beach. You have access to a private beach from the lodge so it is unbelievably convenient if you want to take a dip in the ocean or surf the waves at a moment’s notice.
Our Accommodation
The Surf Lodge has multiple rooms available, as well as a dormitory. We stayed in the poolside unit which meant we were always a step away from the ever-inviting sparkling from the pool. We were not disappointed! The unit has a quaint, wood-cabin feel and came with a bathroom, a small kitchen and bedroom. The bathroom is a private nook with a shower. The kitchen is fully fitted with a gas stove, microwave, cabinets and a small bar fridge. The bedroom is a beautiful, light space with two single beds (For couples – the two single beds can be pushed together if requested). Unfortunately, there isn’t too much to offer in terms of storage and shelving in the bedroom but it is a very comfortable space. I know this is very important to some people so I thought I’d mention that all units have access to free Wi-Fi
Something to take note of – the other units don’t come with a kitchen but there is a sort of communal kitchen situation that is freely available. You can even store your groceries in designated cabinets. The poolside unit, to my knowledge, is the only unit with a kitchen. So if you want to be a little more private, this is the one for you but if you are a social person and enjoy chance encounters with new people, the communal kitchen is not the worst option.

Some other takeaways
Apart from swimming in the ocean or the pool, there are other activities at the Surf Lodge. You can play table tennis, relax in a jacuzzi or play with three very cute border-collies (which was personally our favourite) named Sheila, Parker and George. Unfortunately, the jacuzzi wasn’t working while we were there but I’m sure they are in the process of fixing it.
The surf lodge also will host you on additional experiences. Surf lessons, weekend trips away along the beautiful garden route, safari trips at the Addo Elephant Park and fun water adventures at the Watergat are all things made available to you. There are also delicious local dinner experiences that take place once a week which a lot of international travelers rave about. Here’s a little taste of our adventure to the Addo Elephant Park.
All in all, we felt unbelievably blessed to have stayed at this amazing lodge and would definitely recommend it. Whether you enjoy surfing or just a little bit of peace and relaxation, the Surf Lodge is the place for you.
On to the music
Now for the music bit of the BnB experience. We really had a fun time recording this video. We decided to pick something that went along with the chilled, beach vibes and felt Bob Marley’s Is This Love was a great choice. Our interpretation shied away from the usual reggae feel and embodied something a little bit more smooth and soulful. We hope you enjoy the song and the footage from our stay.
